Kilimanjaro 7-day Lemosho route itinerary

Conquer the Roof of Africa: A 7-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary for Kilimanjaro

Are you ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime? Kilimanjaro, the majestic crown jewel of Tanzania, beckons adventurers from every corner of the globe. With its snow-capped summit, diverse ecosystems, and breathtaking landscapes, Kilimanjaro offers an experience like no other. At Guides of Africa, we specialize in crafting unforgettable journeys, and our 7-day Lemosho Route itinerary promises to take you on a remarkable journey to conquer the Roof of Africa.

Why Choose the Lemosho Route?

The Lemosho Route is renowned for its stunning scenery and relatively low traffic, making it a favorite among trekkers seeking both beauty and tranquility. This route showcases Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts and glacial landscapes. The gradual ascent allows for optimal acclimatization, increasing your chances of reaching the summit—Uhuru Peak, standing majestically at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). With Guides of Africa, you’ll have the best guides, support, and care every step of the way.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

Your adventure begins when you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). As you step off the plane, the warm Tanzanian breeze welcomes you. Our friendly team will meet you and transport you to your hotel in Moshi, a charming town nestled at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Spend the day relaxing and preparing for your ascent.

Tip: Take this opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture. Explore the bustling markets or savor traditional Tanzanian cuisine at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Moshi to Lemosho Gate (2,100 m) – Start of the Trek

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll be driven to the Lemosho Gate, your starting point. The excitement builds as you enter the lush rainforests of Kilimanjaro National Park. This dense forest is alive with the sounds of nature—birds chirping, monkeys swinging through the trees, and the rustle of leaves.

As you trek through the forest, your guide will share insights into the unique flora and fauna of the region. The trail is well-maintained, making for an enjoyable hike. You’ll cover approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) today, with an ascent to 2,100 meters.

After a satisfying day of trekking, you’ll set up camp at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp. As night falls, gather around the campfire and share stories with your fellow adventurers under a canopy of twinkling stars.

Day 3: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp (3,610 m)

Today’s hike takes you from the lush rainforest into the expansive heath zone. As you ascend to Shira 1 Camp, you’ll be greeted by stunning views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape. The trail is more open now, allowing for breathtaking vistas and photo opportunities.

The 10 km (6.2 miles) trek will take you approximately 5-6 hours. You’ll encounter unique plants such as giant lobelias and senecios, which thrive at these altitudes.

Upon reaching Shira 1 Camp, take the time to acclimatize and relax. Enjoy a warm meal prepared by our talented chefs. As the sun sets over the horizon, the views are nothing short of magical.

Day 4: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,840 m) – Day of Acclimatization

To ensure optimal acclimatization, today is a shorter hike to Shira 2 Camp. The distance is only about 7 km (4.3 miles), and you’ll ascend to 3,840 meters, allowing your body to adjust to the elevation.

Take advantage of this day to explore the Shira Plateau, known for its spectacular views and diverse ecosystems. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Shira Cathedral, a stunning rock formation that impresses with its unique beauty.

After a day of exploration, return to camp for dinner and rest. The altitude may start to affect you, but the amazing scenery and camaraderie with fellow trekkers will keep your spirits high.

Day 5: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (3,950 m) via Lava Tower (4,600 m)

Your trek today is an exhilarating one. You’ll ascend to Lava Tower at 4,600 meters before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters. This approach aids in acclimatization by allowing your body to experience higher altitudes before descending to a lower elevation for the night.

The trek to Lava Tower covers about 15 km (9.3 miles) and will take approximately 8 hours. The Lava Tower is an impressive geological feature that gives insight into Kilimanjaro’s volcanic history.

After lunch at Lava Tower, the descent to Barranco Camp offers stunning views, including the famous Barranco Wall. As you arrive at camp, take a moment to appreciate the grandeur of your surroundings. The Barranco Camp is one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro, surrounded by lush vegetation and spectacular views.

Day 6: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640 m)

Today’s trek is challenging but rewarding. You’ll ascend the Barranco Wall, a climb that will test your strength but will also provide breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and glaciers. The ascent is steep but manageable, and with the help of your guides, you’ll conquer it.

After reaching the top, you’ll continue your trek for approximately 13 km (8.1 miles) to Barafu Camp. Here, you’ll set up camp and prepare for the final push to the summit. This is an important day for acclimatization, and you’ll have a chance to rest and hydrate.

As night falls, an air of excitement fills the camp. Prepare your gear and get some rest; the summit day awaits!

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and Descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 m)

The day you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived! Your summit attempt begins around midnight. The path to Uhuru Peak is steep and demanding, but the reward is worth every effort. Armed with headlamps, your group will ascend through the night, with the stars twinkling above.

As dawn approaches, you’ll reach Stella Point (5,745 m), where you can enjoy a breathtaking sunrise over the African plains. The final push to Uhuru Peak is only another hour away, and when you finally stand at the summit, the feeling is indescribable. You’ve conquered Kilimanjaro!

After soaking in the moment and taking photos, begin your descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 m). The trek down can be challenging on tired legs, but your guides will support you every step of the way.

Tip: Remember to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated as you descend. Celebrate your achievement with your fellow trekkers around a campfire that evening.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

On your final day, you’ll trek from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, completing your Kilimanjaro adventure. This short hike of about 10 km (6.2 miles) takes approximately 3-4 hours.

At Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates, a testament to your hard work and determination. Celebrate your accomplishment with your guides and fellow trekkers before heading back to Moshi.
